Welcome to the Jim Acosta Morning Memo on a Monday morning after Trump got bombarded with bad news, then took it out on the campaign trail with him.

Bad Report Card: Friday was jobs report day, and it didn’t go great. Even Fox couldn’t shine up a lower-than-expected September jobs report that wound up in negative territory after revisions and saw an uptick in the unemployment rate.

How brutal was the coverage of the last jobs report before the midterms?

Ouch! That’s gonna leave a mark!

Weekend Warrior: Trump already knew he was in trouble, that’s why he hit the campaign trail this weekend instead of just playing golf and shitposting whatever Natalie Harp fed him.

Impachy-Keen: But the strain was showing even as he took questions from reporters on the way out of town Friday. He was confronted about being impeached if Democrats win.

Well, look, it’s a fake impeachment. And we could’ve done that with Sleepy Joe, but we didn’t do it because it would’ve been inappropriate. I could’ve done that with Hillary Clinton, as you know. I had the chance to do it if I wanted, and I said that would be inappropriate, but with me, they like to do it, so.

Fact-check: Hillary Clinton didn’t commit crimes. You did!

Wandering Off: Then, in the middle of an answer about campaigning for the midterms, Trump suddenly veered off into a riff about his renovations, which he now claims are winning “awards?”

I’m not running, but I’m saying, “Pretend I’m running.” We wanna pretend I’m running. I hope you like what you see here. That’s getting all sorts of awards, and the best of all, do you see the new crane, the red, the red boom? That’s one of the biggest cranes in the world that lift up the steel for the roof. Pretty cool, right?

Bully Pulpit: It wouldn’t be a Trump gaggle without threatening our allies. This time, it was South Korea.

Of Course: And he weighed in on the Cornell rape case again, saying he feels quote “very bad for” the suspects now that AG Letitia James is on the case.

Reporter: Mr. President, what do you think about the New York governor appointing a special prosecutor in the Cornell rape case, Letitia James?

Donald Trump: Well, Letitia James is a corrupt person. She’s totally corrupt, and I can’t imagine it, and I feel badly for whoever she’s looking at because they won’t get a fair shake.

Dozin’ Don Says What: But the quote of the weekend comes from whichever suck-up chimed in to say that quote “people believe you never get tired,” and got this hilarious response.

Reporter: Mr. President, people believe you never get tired.

Donald Trump: I never get tired.

Reporter: And, Mr. President, what will be —

Donald Trump: If I got tired, it would be a big story, I can tell you.

As if Donald Trump’s gaffe-tastic week of insanity and corruption weren’t bad enough, Friday morning brought the last jobs report before the midterms — and it wasn’t good.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics released the September Jobs Report, and it was deadly — a big miss on the expected 90,000 jobs created and a net negative 31,000 jobs when negative revisions are included, and the unemployment rate ticked up a tenth to 4.2 percent. Or here’s how Trump’s BLS put it:

Both nonfarm payroll employment (+29,000) and the unemployment rate (4.2 percent) changed little in September, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.

Tomato, tomahto.

The news coverage, however, was brutal across the board — even on Fox and Newsmax.

NEWSMAX: President Trump putting his economic agenda in particular to the forefront as he hits the campaign trail for these Republican candidates, which he believes could be a game changer come November. But a disappointing jobs report released this morning won’t be providing much help right there.

MS NOW: This jobs report, a big miss. You know, you heard all those other numbers and stats at the top there. What do Republicans do with this?

Guest: I don’t know, make a wish in a fountain? I mean, there’s just not much you can do a month out from the election.

Fox Business: We got the September jobs report earlier this morning. Edward Lawrence joining us from the White House. Not a great report, Edward.

CNBC’s Rick Santelli: Let’s look for the September jobs report, a bit of a disappointment. Expecting 90,000, comes in at 29,000. And we see revisions, two-month revision down 60,000…

Average hourly earnings, now if we take it on a month-over-month basis, this is a big miss, big, big miss!

This comes after Trump cemented his status as a below-freezing president with a record-low 31 percent approval in the new Associated Press poll, after other polls showed him as low as 29 percent.

And all of this comes after a week in which Trump shocked even his critics with an incoherent and frankly mad-as-a-hatter Time Magazine interview, alienated some of his biggest fans, toured the country dropping ranty turds, and ostentatiously violated propaganda laws — to name just a few.

It also comes as the midterm picture has gone from really bad to even worse for Republicans, as Larry Sabato moved 11 races in the Democrats’ direction this week and Election Central has Democrats controlling 53 Senate seats if the midterms were held today.

And while it’s still close in many polls, James Talarico has led in all of the 10 most recent polls.

That explains why Trump was in Texas this week, as does his plea for voters to protect him from impeachment.

There’s still a month to go, but things don’t look great for Trump, and they don’t look to get any better!

Update: A new raft of New York Times/Siena University polls Just dropped with more bad news for Trump and the Republicans.

Democrats lead among likely voters in the Senate races in Texas and Alaska, two states that consistently vote Republican, the polls found. They have an edge in Ohio, which has been tilting rightward for years. Republicans have a slim edge in Iowa, and Democrats are neck-and-neck with Republicans in Kansas, which has not voted for a Democratic senator since 1932.

The Texas result is huge for a couple of reasons. This is the second straight gold standard poll in as many days in which Talarico is above 50%. He leads Paxton by 6, 51% to 45%. They were tied at 47% in the last NYT/Siena poll, in June.

But Greg Sargent had another key observation about Talarico’s run:

Important in new NYT polls: Talarico has pulled even w/ Paxton on immigration, while other Dem candidates are a bit behind.

As I argue, the Talarico Paradox is he's engaging on immigration more forcefully than other Ds despite running in Trumpy state. Polls suggest it's worked.

Things are looking even grimmer for Trump this morning. Let’s see how that plays out as he rallies in Ohio tonight.

Welcome to the Jim Acosta Morning Memo on a Friday morning after Trump stunned the world with a bonkers Time Magazine interview — then hit the campaign trail to make things worse. I’m Jim Acosta. Let’s go to work!

Time Shocker: Trump shocked even his critics with an incoherent Time Magazine cover interview that raised new questions about his mental competence.

In one sample passage, Trump melted down after he was asked about Mitch McConnell, and raged:

Have you seen the videos of Mitch McConnell back in the Senate? Do you think he should resign because of his health condition?

It was a disappointment to a lot of Republicans. So that’s just—well, Sleepy Joe gave pardons to everybody. He gave them to Fauci. He gave them to this. But you mean I’m not allowed to give them, but Sleepy Joe’s allowed to give them? This ain’t gonna be much of a story. Here we are doing this. You haven’t asked me one fucking positive question. All of this. What about this? What about that? What about that? What about this? All negative. Why are you devoting all this time to the White House? You know how I do, I do that out of my back pocket. I pay for a lot of it, but I fix it because the White House should look like that. It shouldn’t look like—if you would have stood in that balcony and looked at that wall, half the wall was falling. It’s actually dangerous. People are walking under, crap was falling off it all the time. Every time it rained, it was leaking, horrible. Now it’s perfect, and I would say that I should be given credit for fixing the White House because I’m also doing very well with the war. I’m doing very well with another war that we already won, Venezuela. Do you notice you haven’t asked me a question about Venezuela?

That meltdown kept on going. There were many more such passages that went viral.

From there, it was off to Texas for some desperate damage control, but not before he faced reporters at the White House and gave himself a tone-deaf grade on the economy.

More like A-HOLE plus, amirite?

Dooce Is Loose: Trump even faced a tough question from Fox News when Peter Doocy asked him why he’s going to Texas if his convention was such a success.

Q: And my other question for you is, if Paxton is telling people behind closed doors that he thinks the convention hurt his poll numbers, why go to Texas?

President Trump: Well, I’ll tell you what. We have to win this election. That convention, you were there. That convention was a tremendous success. It went up against the NFL, and as you know, they had 24… I guess it was, I said 25 yesterday. It was actually, they had 24 million views, and we had 107 million views. In other words, we beat the NFL by four times.

Sorry, Don, your Trump-a-pa-LOSER got 3.3 million viewers.

Job Fair (And Balanced): Speaking of Doocy, Trump singled him out when another reporter asked about a replacement for departed propaganda secretary Karoline Leavitt.

Q: What are you looking for in a new press secretary?

President Trump: Well, we have a lot of people that want that job. I would say many of them are right here. Would you like that job? Maybe a guy like Peter, but he’s making too much money.

Wow, that’s awkward for Doocy, and for Fox News. More on that later.

There was a lot more craziness that would be repeated later, but Trump was also caught flat-footed by a question about the outrageous Cornell rape case.

Q: Mr. President, do you think that Cornell University has done enough to investigate the alleged rape?

President Trump: Well, I don’t know that much about it, but Cornell is a fine school, and I’m sure they’ll do what’s right.

“Sure they’ll do what’s right?” The entire point is that at every turn, they didn’t!

Trump also spoke to reporters when he landed in Texas, and was asked about the botched execution of Krista Pike. Not surprising, but still shocking, Trump actually chuckled as he bantered with Dr. Ronny Jackson about the horrific incident. Watch if you can stand it.

Q: After the botched execution last night in Tennessee, are you going to be pushing for any changes for capital punishment?

President Trump: Well, that was an interesting situation, but you’re going to have to speak to Tennessee about it. Whether or not they’re going to go forward, you know what that was about. That was an execution where the medication didn’t exactly work. He would answer it better than anybody. How does that happen? He’s a great doctor.

Q: It should be easy to do, sir.

That’s the same “Doctor” Ronny Jackson who keeps gushing about Trump and his cognitive tests. Monsters of a feather.

Texas Toast: Then it was off to Denton Texas and a rally at a Peterbilt plant, where he campaigned for Ken Paxton by calling him “a pain in the ass.”

Ken Paxton was at my side more than anybody. And I have to always remember that, because he could be a pain in the ass sometimes. I’ll be honest. Is he here, by the way? Oh, there he is. Good. I didn’t even know if he’s here. I don’t care.

That’s become a pattern for Trump, who seems to be slowly venting his rage at having endorsed a guy who shows all the signs of handing Texas to the Democrats.

Meat Shield: Speaking of Democrats, here’s Trump taking his best shot at James Talarico with an overly drawn out and weird attack abou tquote “getting rid of the meat.”

Aside from being a lie, who could afford to waste meat with the price of beef the way it is?

Welcome to the Jim Acosta Morning Memo on a Thursday morning after two of Trump’s top goons tried to out-do him and Dozin’ Donnie pulled off two more bizarre photo ops. I’m Jim Acosta. Let’s go to work!

Leading off, Pete Hegseth made an absolute spectacle of himself Wednesday, first by appearing in a much-derided series of viral videos that included one that was captioned “This is War.”

Sorry, Pete, to the rest of us that looks like gym class.

Treason For The Seizin’: Then, Hegseth gave an unhinged speech that he dubbed the “State of the Force,” during which he accused the press of “treason.”

A free press is of course important. But partisan activism that intentionally smears the troops in the historic mission they are undertaking is fundamentally anti-American. It is sick. It is a national betrayal. It is treason, actually. I hate to have to say it, but it has to be said.

Trans Hate: The country’s top military official then ticked off a series of insults to brave military veterans that included an anti-trans slur.

We are no longer the woke department or the weak department. Simple translation of that: no fatties, no trannies, no beardos, no weirdos, no wimps, no radicals. Just warriors. Just tough, ready, committed troops.

It doesn’t get less disgusting the more he says it.

The rest of the speech is almost too much to handle, as Hegseth introduced a robotic command that will be headed by two tech leaders and … Newt Gingrich?

Hegseth also announced a new Faith command and explicitly tied the military’s mission to Christianity.

I am establishing the Office of Religious Affairs. Starting today, the Office of Religious Affairs will report straight to the top. No staff filters, no bureaucratic dilution. A direct line to the secretary. This will not be a paper-pushing shop. It will have real teeth. It will protect budgets, demand infrastructure, and strengthen religious support. The experts are chaplains, who finally have an advocate in the highest places.

Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord. Two hundred and fifty years ago we rejected an earthly king an ocean away, appealing instead to a heavenly king above.

The US Constitution might have a thing or two to say about that.

Base Case: Hegseth also announced a plan to turn US bases into prepper hideouts.

Let’s Build A Fort Guys: And then he unveiled what sounded an awful lot like a land-based Death Star?

Spilling The T: But Hegseth’s entire vibe can be summed up in this chunk about cowboys and testosterone. Check it out.

Or as the president likes to say to me, Pete, central casting. I want central casting. The ideological clowns are out. The patriotic cowboys are in. With testosterone testing on top. Diversity is not our strength. Unity is our strength, because that’s all that really matters when the missiles are flying.

Hearing Problems: Trump’s crimes were dragged back into the spotlight by a Republican-led Senate committee that tried to put Jack Smith on the hot seat but ended up engineering the most spectacular faceplant in the history of Congress.

Schitt Show: In a moment that everyone’s talking about, Sen. Eric Schmitt began a bizarre interrogation of Smith over his attendance at a basketball game, complete with an elaborate visual aid.

A truly perplexed Smith was like “I don’t know what the hell you’re talking about,” as a smug Schmitt came right out and accused Smith of PERJURY!

But Sen. Amy Klobuchar settled the mystery moments later as a sputtering Schmitt tried to save face.

I can’t do better for a punchline than this split-screen reaction from Republican Katie Britt.

Welcome to the Jim Acosta Morning Memo on a Tuesday morning after Trump dozed his way through a crap-show photo op and his biggest fan dropped the dreaded “I”-word. Grab some coffee or tea and let’s go!

Steeling a Nap: Trump held a photo op on Monday to celebrate the construction of a $15 billion dollar steel plant that he credited to the tariff policies that have cost American taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars. Make it make sense!

But true to form, Trump had trouble staying awake at his own party.

Trump even had the nerve to invoke the nickname “Sleepy Joe Biden” between naps.

Don’t Believe Your Lying Eyes: But as usual, things were even worse when Trump was awake. Here he is cutting a perfect midterm ad for Democrats by declaring his economy the quote “best we’ve ever had.”

The project is expected to create up to 6,000 new construction jobs, nearly 2,000 manufacturing or mining jobs, and add another $95 billion to the U.S. economy, which is the number one economy in the world by far. We have the best economy we’ve ever had.

Here Comes The Bribe: And Trump repeated his desperate lie about bribing Americans to vote for Republicans with a $5,000 dollar check that will never come.

Because of tariffs, we are taking in hundreds of billions of dollars of profits. It’s one of the reasons I can offer, if Republicans win the House and the Senate, $5,000 to every adult, and we can do it and the Democrats can’t because the Democrats don’t have any income and they’re going to drive us into a depression. They won’t have any money. But we have the exact opposite.

Fact-check: Americans paid those tariffs, and the refunds are already going to corporations, not the people you ripped off with this scheme.

D’oh Canada: Trump assailed our former ally Canada, and spun a fantasy about our Northern neighbors apologizing and giving him quote “everything.”

REPORTER: So, Mr. President, how does this end?

DONALD TRUMP: I think what’s going to happen is over the next three or four weeks, they’re going to come to us and they’re going to say, “We’re going to get rid of all the tariffs.” We’re going to win everything. We even have Lake Ontario. It’s now Lake America. And that’s been done, by the way. Actually just got done. They told me it was just completed. But they’re going to come in, and they’re going to say, “Sir, we are sorry.”

Sure, Jan!

Xi-Shine Boy: And in true Trump fashion, he gushed about his dictator pal President Xi, calling their meeting a quote “twelve.”

By the way, we had a great meeting with President Xi. I would rate it on the scale of zero to 10, I would rate it a 12. Very respectful. Very good. Great meeting.

Welcome to the Jim Acosta Morning Memo on a Monday morning after a packed weekend that began with an unhinged Trump attack on a woman who was doing her job and ended with him spouting lies and ranting about golf. Let’s go to work!

The Constant Gardner: Despite embarrassing defeats in court, Trump banned CNN from Air Force One for his trip to Tennessee Saturday morning, which prompted MS NOW’s Akayla Gardner to confront him as he departed the White House.

Trump melted down on Gardner and shoved his finger at her as she refused to back down.

GARDNER: Do you only want outlets that support you to be a part of the press pool?

TRUMP: No, no, no. I want real news, not fake news — like you. I want-

CROSSTALK: Mr. President-

TRUMP: Listen. I want real news. I love an open, free press. What I don’t like is the fake press where a group like CNN, few people watch it, or MSDNC, which they changed I guess to NOW. But, you know why they changed it? Because their ratings are so bad. What I don’t like-

GARDNER: Do you not want tough questions, sir?

TRUMP: Wait, wait. Quiet. What I- what I don’t like is fake news. And they’re fake news. 100%. In two years…

GARDNER: Do you not want tough questions, sir?

TRUMP: …In two years, I doubt they did one good story. And I won the election in a landslide. So what we don’t want is we don’t want fake news! [JAMS FINGER AT HER]

Jeeeers Donnie: From there, it was off to Tennessee, where he attended the Texas vs. Tennessee football game. It was tough to make out the reaction from the broadcast when Trump was introduced on the Jumbotron.

But local news anchor Will Puckett posted social media video that clearly showed loud boos mixed in with the applause.

Natalie’s Show-and-Tell: During the game, video influencer Aaron Rupar flagged a still photo in which Natalie Harp can be seen showing a laptop screen to Trump and a guest, a powerful illustration of the influence the controversial staffer has over Trump

Speaking of Harp, Trump’s so-called “Human Binkie” was the star of a brutal cold open when Saturday Night Live opened their 52^nd season. Ashley Padilla portrayed Harp crashing a meeting with Zohran Mamdani and warning “If you hurt him, I will end you!”

It’s gonna be awkward when she shows THAT to him on her laptop.

Golf Clap: Trump attended another sporting event on Sunday, the President’s Cup golf tournament, where he faced a decidedly more friendly crowd — although the Mirror did report someone yelling out “You suck!” during his remarks.

He used those remarks to try and influence coverage of his visit.
